Now that Open Rails has reached a stage where it can do most of what Microsoft Train Simulator does, attention is shifting to features that only Open Rails can provide. You should expect the lists below to grow.

In part this is because the Open Rails platform supports finer graphical detail by accommodating more 'polys', with smoother curves and more detailed textures. But also the Development Team has begun to include Open Rails-specific parameters so models can be built which work with the Open Rails simulator in ways which Microsoft Train Simulator ignores.

There are more than 40 of these parameters (identified by the prefix 'ORTS') which are used to provide features such as more realistic smoke for diesel locos and more realistic performance for steam locos.

Dekosoft Trains have since offered GP30 locos with 3D cabs exclusively for Open Rails.

Peter Newell has just released (June 2015) the Great Zig Zag Railway, a steam route for Open Rails v1.0 (this 120MB download requires no other files).

How to install Train Simulator addons / mods

Hi guys, I’m basically showing you today how to install unofficial Train Simulator addons / mods. So, what you need to do is you need to go to steam and scroll down buttons to program files x86. Then you need to go to the steam apps and click on Common. After that you need to find RalWorlds folder. Inside of it you should look for Utilities file (near the bottom) and click on it. It should come up with this warning that it doesn’t come up down – it will say D12. And the it’s another thing on your program – just click yes. One more thing – you need to press refresh to get it straight on. As you can see now all my files are loading up. I’ve done this after my Manchester Metrolink video because I thought that it’d be easier. Now I struggle to find it. I thought to be easy to assure you. So, all you do is as soon as you go in, is you’re after is it comes up with tools and docks. You need to go across the top left a package manager that I’m on now and knotted. I’m going to show you what it is in a minute. I’ve installed lords of load and loads of add-ons / mods so I’ll just show you basically that I know. This just conducted and I just found out on the day of the carving. So far, I just do a video for you just did just to show you what to do because I know it’ll be easier for you to do a tutorial. Wait for this to load, if it does take a long time to load up when you start getting loads and loads of addons / mods and things. So, I’ve been coming back when it’s finished. Here we are and so as you can see these are the others that I’ve got and all this bunch barely nine. Some of them don’t work. I’ve got all these. You can see them all: Metrolink 5016 Manchester one. So, what you need to do is to install the new one. Click the big button that says installed on it and go down. Then going to whichever file, you served it in. When you get to the file – I think I will show you what to do. Go to your downloads you have live downloaded it in winzip format. What you basically need to do is cut it and try to put it to desktop. Because of our way I’m at the moment, I can’t really put it to desktop. I’m going to put it in my bund they come forward where we work our down with videos. So just extract it there – I do recommend extracting it to your desktop as it’s easy to access. You can see that a magic folder that’s earned the title and download. Then it says .rwp – you take it to installing. So we will just wait for this to reload. If you can just cut this out. So, basically, I do recommend installing it in desktop because when all you need is the rwp folder. But another most of these are free and it’s pretty easy. I didn’t find out this before and this just saves you a fair bit of money. At the Nelson they have some fantastic add-ons / mods that save you a bit of money. So here we are and I’ve already got it here but I’ll just find it. So, I need to go into the Bandicam folder. There we’ve got the .rwp and it says it’s already installed. Look, this is what comes up with. If it isn’t, it will come up with this loading bar. Basically, what you need to do is finish it – it’s going to load up now and it is just basically it. It is overwriting the folder. It will warn you when it’s done. Oh here we are shown this instead – it is a tree layout. You can just click on and it will show all folders. You can go to the list view – it shows all the different files that it came with. That’s basically it. So look, I know that some maps do have quite a list of folders – let me just remind you that sometimes when you downloading stuff and you’ve got to be careful of adverts and all that bunch. I do recommend downloading a security thing. Some downloads don’t work unfortunately. Thanks for watching, I really do hope this has been helpful.
